premature preview

I don't usually review a book when I'm only 10 pages in...but I picked up In the City of Shy Hunters by Tom Spanbauer (recommended by my dear and fabulous little sister) and couldn't resist.

The main character gives this description of his friend Rose:

Drop-dead freshly fucked gorgeous.

Maybe a book shouldn't be judged by a single phrase but man, this does bode well.

Sounds like a great book, but I really got pissed off by what the 'Library Journal' wrote "Is it just another AIDS story concerning the early plague years?"
And if it was, so fucking what! Every person's experience of those first dark, scary years needs to be heard!
Seriously, it is par (but certainly not exactly like) saying, oh another story/movie about the Holocaust.
The 80's were a beautiful, yet tainted period of time for many of us. Finally openly celebrating our way of life, and yet fearing and not understanding what was happening. We lost too many, and we certainly got no help from Reagan! The memories and experiences of those we lost and those left behind should be honored. These stories need to be told, so we don't forget all that we lost and still can loose if we remain silent.
So enough of that before I really start to rant!
